If you heard a loud smash on Friday, November 6th, don’t worry—it was just the sound of sledgehammers meeting steel.
Blacksburg High School Y St-ers held their first big Project Day for the Meltdown campaign—and it was a hit! With their final football game against rival Christiansburg High, Y St-ers used the buzz and excitement to generate some attention for Meltdown.
The concept was simple enough: they painted up a junked car and let people swing a sledgehammer at it during the school tailgate before the game in exchange for completing a Meltdown Survey or Message Sticker. With 15 Blacksburg Y St-ers out there walking the crowd and collecting MOPs, it would have been impossible to not know what the car smash was about. Every time I turned around, Y St-ers were telling people about the new smokeless and dissolvable products, and that Sports Illustrated, a magazine that tons of young athletes read, is advertising Snus. The Y St-ers even let me take a few swings (after writing Message Stickers, of course). Not gonna lie… it felt gooooood =D
Special props to Y St-ers Emma and Lydia for making this event happen. They made calls to get all the right approvals, and got a local junkyard to donate the destined-for-destruction car.
So Y St-ers, what’s your Project Day gonna be? Email your coordinator (Kyle@ystreet.org, Jenny@ystreet.org, KD@ystreet.org, or Drew@ystreet.org) today with your ideas!
