Y Street is the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth’s award-winning volunteer initiative for high
school students. Once a
school is accepted into the Y Street Partner Program, students are trained on Y Street’s campaigns to
promote a healthier
Virginia. After the training, Y Street members (Y-Sters) work directly with staff to plan and lead
their own projects,
events, and more. Here’s how it works:
Y Street Trainings
To become members, youth learn about Y Street’s current campaigns, the issues they address, and how
to get active in Y Street through an interactive training at their school.
Projects & Events
After completing their training, youth lead projects and events in their schools and communities to
support Y Street’s campaign efforts.
Conferences & Presentations
As Y-Sters become leaders, they give educational presentations on campaign topics and present key
campaign findings at local, state, and national conferences.
Meetings with Key Decision Makers
Top Y-Sters meet with school boards, city councils, and other local and state government officials
to share information about Y Street and our campaigns.
Statewide Days of Action
Y Street sponsors two statewide days of action (Tobacco-Free Spirit Day and Rev Your Bev Day) for
groups around Virginia to help promote a healthier state.
Y Street Leadership Team (YSLT)
Each year, a group of dedicated youth is selected for the YSLT to be the leaders in their schools
and communities, and help with extra Y Street opportunities.
